Carboxy Methyl Starch (CMS) is a water-soluble polysaccharide which is widely employed as an additive; it is biodegradable and non-toxic products that are finding an increasing number of applications.
Sodium carboxy methyl starch (referred to as CMS) is a starch ether derivative derived from starch. It is soluble in water under room temperature and forms a colorless, transparent and viscous liquid.
Carboxy Methyl Starch (CMS) is extensive applied in many fields of industrial production with its unique performance and higher economic benefits as a kind of important chemical auxiliary. CMS can be used as thicker, binder and emulsifying agent in various applications.
Applications of CMS in non food Industry:1. Used as warp size:
Because of its good emulsifying property, carboxy methyl starch can be compatible with many hydrophilic polymeric compounds. With good adhesion to natural fibe, it is used mainly as adhesive sizing material for warp sizing, to size cotton yarn of small and medium size, linen yarn and blended yarn.
2. Used a printing thickener:
High viscosity sodium carboxy methyl starch can take the place of other printing pastes with the advantages of good solubility in cold water, easy-beating, good permeability, high color yield, easy-desizing and lower price.
For Oil well Drilling industry
CMS is an effective "economical" Fluid Loss Control agent for water-based drilling fluids. Increasing additions of CMS can cause an increase in desired viscosity. Used of CMS does not require any biocide treatment in normal drilling fluid operations. CMS is typically unaffected by normal solids concentrations and products a tough, slick filter cake, which promotes a reduction in friction and potentially increases drilling rates. CMS may be less effective in high levels of Mg and Ca ions and it is recommended that all "high hardness" be treated out prior to CMS addition. The normal dosage is 0.3~0.5 percentages.
For paper-making industry
CMS used in paper-making and dyeing industry for its property of retaining moisture and fluidizing. CMS colloid is transparent and delicate. It used as drying agent, wet end additive and sizing agent in making paper and combines with PVA to form oil-resistant and water soluble coating.
For Detergent industry
CMS can be used in Detergents to replace CMC because anionic character of CMS is same as CMC. The usage of CMS in the production of detergents delivers remarkable advantages, being able to totally substitute CMC and part of polyacrilates, giving a further advantage in the biodegradability of the product.
For electric welding rods industry
Because of the high build and cohesiveness of carboxy methyl starch, it can be used as binding element and propping agent.
